Credit Union Membership

You'll experience a different approach to banking when you bank with us.  North Sydney Credit Union offers a full range of financial products and services, just like banks do, but our focus and our priorities are different.

The fundamental operating principle of a credit union is democratic ownership.  One member , one vote.  All members are equal with respect to the power of their vote.  When you open an account with us you are automatically a member.  All our members are invited to attend our annual meetings and participate in our operations.  You can elect our board of directors, voice your concerns, and vote on real issues that matter to you.

The North Sydney Credit Union is locally owned by members from our very own community and our board of directors consists of members from our community.  That's how we understand what's important to our members, and how we keep our decisions based on local realities.  It's a human approach, and another reason how we're different.

What's the advantage?

  • Credit Unions are owned by their members not shareholders
  • Credit Unions offer a different approach to banking, one that is focused on the member first
  • Credit Unions believe in creating profits for their members and community, rather than profiting from them
  • Credit Unions customize their product and service packages to each member's individual needs rather than forcing standard national programs
  • Credit Unions make policy decisions based on local community needs

We benefit from the support and expertise of the nation's largest network of financial institutions, with Credit Unions servicing over 5 million Canadians nationwide.

Over-the-Counter Service - We've been ranked #1 in overall quality of customer service for several consecutive years; stop by and find out why.

Credit Unions, like other financial institutions, are closely regulated - your deposits are secure with North Sydney Credit Union.  Partnered with the Credit Union Deposit Insurance Corporation (CUDIC), they protect depositors by providing an effective and efficient system of insurance and loss of prevention.

A Common Share purchase is required to obtain membership with North Sydney Credit Union.  If, at any time, you decide to close your account and withdraw your membership, your investment in common shares will be redeemed from North Sydney Credit Union and refunded to you.  In the case of a joint account, two common shares must be purchased. Common shares sell at a price of $5.00 per share per member.
