What is Interac e-Transfer®?

Interac e-Transfer® is used to spend, request and receive money in minutes*.  Anyone with an email address or mobile phone number and an account at a participating Canadian credit union or bank can use the service without sharing any personal financial information.  The process is simple, convenient and secure and provides a great alternative to cheques and cash.

How secure is Interac e-Transfer®?

Interac e-Transfer® is one of the safest digital money transfer services in the world.  When the service is used, the money is transferred using established and secure banking procedures that financial institutions have used for years to settle cheques, bank machine deposits and withdrawals.  Money never travels by email or text - these are simply used to notify you that money was sent or requested, as well as provide instructions to deposit. 

How do I access Interac e-Transfer®?

Interac e-Transfer® can be accessed through Online Banking, Mobile Web and the Mobile App.  Once logged in, simply select transfers from the navigation menu to access Interac e-Transfer®. 

To send an Interac e-Transfer:

All you need is an email address, access to online or mobile banking at a participating financial institution, and the email address or mobile number of the person you are sending money to. 

  • Login to online or mobile banking at a participating financial institution
  • Choose Interac e-Transfer® within the Transfer/Payment menu options
  • Select a recipient by entering an email address and/or mobile phone number
  • Fill in the Interac e-Transfer® information (dollar amount, account from which to withdraw the funds, a security question that only the recipient will know the answer to and optional personal message)
  • Follow the instructions to confirm the information and complete the transfer
  • If you haven't signed up for online or mobile banking, contact your financial institution or visit their online banking website to sign up.

Tracking your transfer

As a sender - Interac e-Transfer® confirmation numbers are saved in your online banking history. In addition, you will receive an email notification and/or text message once the intended recipient has accepted the transfer.

As a recipient - You will receive an email notification and/or text message when the transfer is sent, indicating the amount as well as instructions for depositing it.

How to deposit an Interac e-Transfer®

You can deposit your transfer by clicking on the link contained in the text message or email notification, or you can type the link contained in the notification into your browser — no matter how you're notified, you can deposit your transfer at any computer or mobile device connected to the Internet.
